Faced with all the challenges of an urban school district, many communities give up. But we know that giving up is unacceptable. We know that parents can take ownership. By working together, parents can reform our schools from within. We can break cycles of inequity and apathy. We can improve student achievement. We can give students at risk of dropping out of school a reason to graduate. We can effect positive change.
Parents for Public Schools - Greater Jackson is the founding chapter of PPS. We work to bring parents and other concerned citizens together across historic divisions of race, socio-economic status, geography, and special interests as champions for public schools and advocates for quality education for all children.
PPS was formed in 1989 by a group of parents in Jackson, Mississippi to recruit families to support public education. Because of its early success, public education advocates and supporters urged PPS to create a national organization, which was later established in 1991.
Since then Parents for Public Schools - Greater Jackson has been working in Jackson area public schools, improving the quality of education, adding programs and resources to classrooms and empowering parents to take the initiative.
